About Batlow

Batlow is famous across Australia for apples but peaches, nectarines and cherries are also grown in the beautiful orchards surrounding the town.

Panoramic views, clean mountain air and the fresh local fruit make Batlow a "must see" when in the region.  Usually surrounded by the green, gold and brown of forest and native bushland, Batlow celebrates spring with its festival in October. This is when the  orchards deck themselves in pink and white blossom, heralding the new season of apples.

Facts and Figures

The township of Batlow dates back to the 19th century goldrush.  In 1854 prospectors converged on Reedy Creek  (the name by which Batlow was first known) and the need to feed the gold seekers led to the establishment of the farms and orchards.

Perfect climate and soil conditions for apples meant that fruit quickly became a major industry.  The first cool stores in NSW were built in Batlow in 1923.  This milestone was quickly followed by the formation of the Cool Stores co-operative and the Batlow Packing House.

Forestry also contributes to the town's economy, with large native and softwood forests covering the hillsides around the town.  Bago State Forest extends from Batlow to the western edge of Blowering Dam.  The forest itself offers great bushwalking and scenic drives while Blowering is popular for camping and water sports.
